Of course you should recognize that much of the political context cited in the text has changed dramatically since 1999. In the context of the Park itself, most of the areas discussed in SECOND NATURE which were red-curbed at the time of that project remain red-curbed to this day. Police continue their periodical sting operations against male social-sexual practices. However, in one encouraging development, a local AIDS Service Provider weekly sends a large van with education information and HIV-testing facilitaties into the Fern Dell area of Griffith Park. The presence of the van has helped to normalize the situation to some extent. Politically, as you well know, today's focus for the mainstream gay community is on marriage and cowboys. Social-sexual practices in public space remain the pariah of most gay politics.
